Decorating a Dorm Room

I can hardly believe summer is coming to an end, and it’s time for students to go back to school.  It’s such an exciting time though, whether you’re a student, parent, friend, or neighbor.  One of the most fun parts of going back to school is shopping for clothes, school supplies, and decor.  It’s a time to explore and express your personal style.

I made some of my best friends when I was at Vandy and look back fondly on my memories of living in the dorms.  I remember spending hours working on the gallery walls my suite mates and I shared in our common areas.  It was a fun and personalized space, and that helped make it our own.  Though a dorm room/suite is a small and sterile looking place when you arrive, there are things you can do to make it feel more like home.

  • Decorate the walls – They’ll be drab when you move into the place.  Don’t be afraid to go for a gallery wall, and it doesn’t have to be fancy.  Things like posters, magazine tears, maps, and photographs are all good elements to start your gallery.
  • Cover the floors – They too will be drab.  Get a great area rug, and you won’t even notice the rest of the floor.
  • Nice bedding – The reality is that your bed will take up a large part of your room and be one of the focal points.  Bedding with simple patterns or pops of color makes a good choice.  Try to pick something that you know you’ll like for at least a couple of years.
  • Storage and organization – Space is tight, so you need to have good storage pieces that will help you stay organized, and be efficient with the placement of your furniture.
  • Last but not least, make it fun.  After all, this is where you spend “the best four years of your life”.  Remember it’s a young and casual space so you can be truly adventurous with your choices.

Here are some of our favorite dorm inspiration images.  We wish everyone a great school year, and let us know if you need help decorating!
