]]>Homes have become so much more over the last year – a safe haven, an office, a gym, a classroom, and more. With so much more time being spent at home, people have been making a lot of improvements, from redecorating to remodeling to even building a new home. For those who are building, you may find it interesting to know that many home builders in Ohio work with Columbia Gas to build EfficiencyCrafted℠ Homes. These homes are built with higher energy efficiency standards and designed to increase comfort, reduce energy costs (up to 30% less than other new homes built to code), and maintain a home’s value.
As you know, I love a good site visit, so I was excited to have the opportunity to tour two EfficiencyCrafted Homes built by Rockford Homes recently: one that was pre-drywall and one that was finished. Many of the energy-efficient features are installed early in the process, so it was great to have that behind the scenes look to really appreciate it.
First, we walked through the pre-drywall home, and team members from Columbia Gas showed me many energy efficient features, including improved insulation, air sealing, high performance windows, and high-efficiency heating equipment. I was really impressed with the quality of the build. As someone who lives in an old home built in the 1920s, I can recognize the value of these upgrades. I know exactly where I’m losing heat in the winter and cool air in the summer, and that isn’t going to happen nearly as much in this home. It is built for comfort.
Once we finished touring the pre-drywall home, we walked down the street to tour the finished home. It was beautiful with custom millwork, fine finishes, and high ceilings. To complete the space, they added ENERGY STAR® certified appliances and lighting, which meet high standards for energy performance and are well designed.
After the tour, the team showed me how a third-party Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rater inspects and tests the home. It includes a blower door test, which shows how air tight and energy efficient a home can be. It was loud but fun to see, and this home more than passed the test.
No matter the price range, EfficiencyCrafted Homes are built to higher energy efficiency standards and pass a rigorous inspection. Building a home with exceptional design elements and materials delivers higher quality, comfort, and energy savings. Saving money and resources is a win-win.

]]>In spring, I love pastels with a few pops, so I went with a citrus color palette, accented by a Tiffany blue check table runner. I made floral arrangements with pink, coral, and yellow flowers to tie to the grapefruit, oranges, and lemons used as decor and garnishes.
At each place setting, I served freshly sliced grapefruit. I love citrus fruit on the stem, but sometimes it can be hard to find. You can get the look by garnishing the fruit with fresh bay leaves. I did that with the grapefruit at each place setting and oranges and lemons around the table.
One of my favorite places to “outsource” the main dish is The Honey Baked Ham Company. They have the BEST ham, which is the perfect balance of sweet and savory, as well as delicious sides and desserts. If you don’t feel like cooking or paying for catering, they’re a great option.
For my bruncheon, I served a Honey Baked Ham and their heat and serve side dishes.
I also served King’s Hawaiian Sweet Rolls, which you can get at Honeybaked or the grocery store. They are perfect for making little ham sandwiches for the bruncheon or with leftovers. They’re so good that Raleigh was asking for them every day after the bruncheon. Try them with the honey mustard or cranberry walnut chutney.
For dessert, I served their Coconut Cake (available for a limited time) and Blueberry Coffee Cake. Both looked and tasted like they were freshly baked! I just dressed them up with some fresh fruit, and they were ready to be served.
For the signature drink, I served grapefruit mimosas, a fun twist on a classic and so easy to make.
I hope this inspires your celebration and you have a wonderful Mother’s Day with family and friends!

A cluttered room can often feel smaller. Neatly store away non-essential items and limit decorative accessories.
Invest in a storage coffee table or ottoman to stay organized and clear clutter.
Opt for fewer pieces of furniture to make your space feel bigger. For instance, consider a sectional sofa over a sofa and chairs.
You can physically free up space by choosing smaller or specialist furniture that is multi-purpose or that can be folded away. Brands like Crate & Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Wayfair offer small space furniture to make it even easier.
Use light colors on the walls and floors to make the room feel airy. Dark colors absorb light instead of reflecting it.
Mirrors create the illusion of extra space by reflecting the room and light. Place mirrors opposite windows, to create a sense of an extra window, add depth, and increase natural light.
Oversized artwork makes a room feel larger in scale.
Lucite and glass items take up less visual space and allow for light to flow through them.
A larger area of visible floor can make a room feel bigger. Select a rug size that allows you to place the front legs of your sofa and chairs on it. Selecting a rug too big or too small can make the space seem smaller, so measure carefully.
If you’re able, remodeling your home to have a more open floor plan can certainly help open up space. This is a job that is best left to professionals though, as it involves understanding the structural integrity of your home and possibly relocating wiring and plumbing. Full-service companies like Est, Est Inc can help you to create the perfect open plan layout.

]]>With the holiday season in full swing, so are the holiday parties. As someone who loves to entertain, I know there is a lot that goes into planning. From the food, to the drinks, to where you’ll store everyone’s coats, there are so many details to remember. Here are some finishing touches that can sometimes be overlooked, to help make your next party a hit!
Of course you wouldn’t forget about the music, but why not take it up a notch? Smart speakers and music streaming platforms have changed the way that we listen to music. Using a service like Spotify, you can create a playlist and give access to all of your guests. They’ll have a chance to add their own tracks to the set list and create fun surprises and memories for everyone.
If you’re having a party all evening and night, guests are going want to touch up at some point. Having a small basket or tray with a range of different cosmetics and personal care products in the bathroom can be a nice gesture. Leave a friendly note letting them know they are welcome to use the items. Guests will look and feel their best and be very appreciative.
When given the option, people often like to spend some party time outside. Even if it’s cold where you live guests may want to step out for a breather, so create a space that is warm and inviting. Set up your patio furniture and accessories, blankets, and consider getting a small outdoor heater to keep guests warm and cozy. It will make the space much more comfortable and could help with crowd control inside too.
Even though you’re the party host, guests will often bring something along with them. It’s good to be prepared to have a space to keep the items. Extra space in the fridge, an iced beverage tub, or the bottom of your bar cart can all be great places to store these extras and gifts that people might bring.
Everyone will be taking lots of photos, so grab some photo booth props and a backdrop for added fun. Put your camera on a tripod and capture all of your guests photo booth style. Create and share a hashtag specific to the party, so guests and friends can look back on the photos anytime they want.
Nowadays, part of the party experience is being able to share what you’re doing online. Create and share a Wi-Fi guest network and password, so your guests can stay connected and post away on Instagram and Facebook. With high speed options from Suddenlink.com, you can host lots of people at the same time without your network slowing down.
Cheers and happy holidays!
